Expansion into Schleswig-Holstein: VSB to start construction of Flintbek wind farm in 2024

First VSB Group wind farm in Schleswig-Holstein approved and awarded by the Federal Network Agency: the Group, which specialises in the development of wind energy and photovoltaic parks, can begin construction of two wind turbines in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. Construction of the Flintbek wind farm, with a total capacity of 11.4 megawatts, is due to start in the summer of 2024.

VSB received approval in accordance with the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG) for the two Nordex N149 wind turbines, each with a power rating of 5.7 MW, from the State Office for the Environment at the end of September 2023. The turbines will be built at a distance of more than 1,000 metres from the Kleinflintbek, Großflintbek and Boksee neighbourhoods. With this project, VSB successfully participated in the Federal Network Agency’s tender for onshore wind energy in November 2023 and was awarded the contract in December 2023. Construction preparations for access roads, turbine sites, excavations, foundations and upgrading of the supply route are now expected to start in summer 2024. If all goes to plan, the park will be operational by the end of 2025.

“Thanks to a highly committed approval authority, we have been able to make rapid progress with our plans and bring the construction of the new wind farm within reach. Working with the municipality of Flintbek has been instrumental in helping us progress. We have found a common denominator and made this a project where all partners are on an equal footing,” says Thomas Winkler, Managing Director of VSB Neue Energien Deutschland GmbH

“Climate targets, a carbon-neutral community, energy self-sufficiency – these are all issues that we need to and want to address in Flintbek. The wind farm allows us to take the next step in innovation. It is a building block in our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and switch to green technologies for energy generation,” says Olaf Plambeck, Mayor of the municipality of Flintbek

Archaeology at the wind farm
During the approval planning, the VSB team also dealt with archaeological issues, as the region is known for the so-called Flintbek crescent. This is a crescent-shaped series of archaeological sites consisting mainly of Neolithic and Bronze Age graves. Further preliminary archaeological investigations will therefore be carried out when construction work starts on the crane areas, turbine sites and access roads to the wind farm, in order to catalogue and preserve any new sites.

Promoting culture, sports and social projects
As part of the wind energy project, VSB is promoting the local cultural scene, sports and social initiatives in the municipality of Flintbek. The team is looking forward to the premiere of a new stage programme by local artist Anna Magdalena Bössen on 16 March 2024. More information about the programme (in German) is available at www.annamagdalenabössen.de/energie. VSB will also work together with the sports club TSV Flintbek and will soon be sponsoring the advertising boards at the club ground. The Group is also providing financial support for the local 2024 summer programme for children. Children from disadvantaged families will be the main beneficiaries of this funding.
