VSB Germany: Over 800 megawatts in approval process – strong Repowering share in wind energy

Across Germany and Europe, the number of new installations and project approvals in the renewable energy sector continues to rise. VSB Germany confirms this positive trend: more than 800 megawatts (MW) of wind, solar PV, and battery storage projects are currently undergoing regulatory approval processes. Repowering of existing wind farms accounts for 20 percent of the company's total project development portfolio.
This week, the German and international wind industry gathers in North Frisia for HUSUM Wind, showcasing strong figures and reaffirming the vital role of renewable energy in energy security, sector coupling, and the decarbonisation of industry and society.
VSB Group, together with its German subsidiary VSB Germany, is also entering discussions with customers and partners with a solid pipeline: over 800 MW of wind, solar, and battery storage projects are currently in the permitting phase in the German market alone. Of this, approximately 330 MW were submitted within the last 12 months. VSB’s current 20 percent repowering share in wind energy reflects the broader industry trend, which reported a 35 percent repowering share of total commissioning in the first half of 2025.
Thomas Winkler, Managing Director of VSB Germany, states: “Repowering is a strategically vital focus area for VSB and will play an increasingly important role in our project development in the coming years. The ‘greenfield rush’ of the past two years is beginning to level off, giving way to a steadily rising share of repowering projects. Repowering is not just an opportunity it is a strategic imperative and will soon be the only way to secure market share in Germany.”
Dr. Felix Grolman, CEO of VSB Group, adds: “Germany remains one of the key pillars of the VSB Group’s project pipeline, which now totals over 20 gigawatts across Europe. This solid foundation enables us to continue driving growth in wind, solar PV, and battery storage. We are fully committed to accelerating the energy transition by continuously initiating high-impact renewable energy projects.”

Repowering delivers performance: Modern turbines such as here at the Elster wind farm increase renewable electricity generation. At VSB Deutschland, repowering currently accounts for 20 per cent.
