VSB Germany and the Bitterfeld-Wolfen Municipal Utilities (Stadtwerke Bitterfeld-Wolfen) have signed a contract to realise a photovoltaic project with an installed capacity of 19.3 MWp, along with an option for the municipal utilities to purchase the plant. The solar facility will be built on approximately 16 hectares within the urban area of Bitterfeld-Wolfen and is a key component of the region’s energy transition.

The project, which is situated west of the A9 motorway and north of Zschepkau, includes the option for the municipal utilities to purchase and operate 5 MWp of the generated capacity. The remaining part will remain owned by VSB. The electricity produced will be fed into the public grid via the planned Salzfurtkapelle substation.

Christian Dubiel, Managing Director of Bitterfeld-Wolfen Municipal Utilities, emphasises the importance of the project: “This initiative is a crucial part of our strategy to diversify local energy supply and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. It strengthens the regional production of renewable electricity and sends a clear signal for climate protection.”

Thomas Winkler, Managing Director of VSB Germany, adds: “This contract signing marks the beginning of a landmark project. It underscores our commitment to the region and our contribution to sustainable energy supply. With innovative approaches like this, we not only support the local economy but also actively contribute to climate protection.”

The project also includes measures to enhance the ecological value of the site. A regional seed mixture will be sown under the solar panels to promote biodiversity. In addition, the site will be grazed by a local shepherd, ensuring sustainable and environmentally friendly management. Another benefit for the city of Bitterfeld-Wolfen comes from the remuneration according to § 6 EEG: 0.2 cents per kilowatt-hour fed into the grid can flow into the city's coffers. These revenues directly benefit the municipality and strengthen its financial stability.

The building application for the project was submitted in April 2024, and approval is expected by the end of the year. Once approved, the municipal utilities will have the option to acquire the project. Thanks to the proximity to the existing Löberitz wind farm, which is also being developed by the VSB Group, synergies in the use of infrastructure can be achieved, increasing the efficiency of the area.
