Following successful approval and award by the Bundesnetzagentur (Federal network agency), construction work on the northern expansion of the Vockenrod wind farm is currently in full swing. Project developer VSB is installing two additional Nordex N149-5.X wind turbines at the site, further strengthening its presence in the central Hessian district of Vogelsberg.
The first phase of construction, comprising three turbines with a total capacity of 17.1 megawatts (MW), was completed and commissioned in spring 2024. The current expansion is scheduled to be operational in the first half of 2026. With the two new turbines, each delivering 5.7 MW, the wind farm will be able to supply climate-friendly electricity to an additional 17,000 people—making a significant contribution to the regional energy transition.
The project is progressing rapidly: civil engineering work began in August 2024, followed by road construction and the preparation of crane pads starting in February 2025. Cable laying and drilling for the cable routes were also completed during this phase. Since June 2025, work has been underway on the foundations for both turbines.
The next construction phase—erection of the towers—will begin in the coming weeks. Delivery of the concrete tower segments is set to start in mid-July 2025, followed by tower assembly. Interior installation work within the towers is scheduled for August. The main components—including the nacelle, steel tower segments, and rotor blades—will be delivered at the end of September. Assembly of the steel tower and nacelle is planned for October 2025.
"The expansion marks the next milestone in our project portfolio for Central Hesse," says Thomas Winkler, Managing Director of VSB Germany. "With the Vockenrod site, we are once again sending a strong signal in support of a regional, climate-friendly energy supply."
Dr. Felix Grolman, CEO of the VSB Group, adds: "The energy transition demands both speed and reliability. With the expansion in Vockenrod, we are demonstrating that both are achievable – through planning certainty, experience, and the trust of our local partners."
