The project developer for wind energy, photovoltaics, and battery storage, VSB, has commenced construction work on another wind farm in North Rhine-Westphalia. In the northeast of the Lippe district, two wind turbines will be erected and brought into operation by autumn 2025.
Covering an area of approximately 14 hectares, the Extertal wind farm will take shape over the coming months, featuring two Enercon E138 wind turbines with a combined nominal capacity of 8.4 megawatts. Construction of the access roads and site areas began this week. VSB is collaborating with Trompeter Erdbau GmbH from Blomberg for this phase. The foundations will be laid in spring 2025, with the main components of the turbines expected to be delivered and erected over the summer. The work is expected to be completed by October next year, when the two wind turbines will be put into operation.
After its commissioning, the wind farm will bring ongoing value creation and additional scope for local projects to the community of Extertal. In accordance with § 6 of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), VSB will share the revenue from the wind farm with the host community. This amounts to 0.2 cents per kilowatt-hour of electricity from the two wind turbines. All locations whose area lies at least partly within a radius of 2.5 kilometres from the turbines will be considered.
In 2022, VSB already planned, constructed, and commissioned a wind turbine for a local citizen energy cooperative nearby Dörentrup-Wendlinghausen. The turbine has been owned by the energy cooperative since March 2023.
“Together with the community and for the residents, we are creating real local value with the Extertal wind farm, delivering ecological and economic benefits where they are needed most. Our goal is to highlight the opportunities of the energy transition through community participation while contributing to climate protection,” said Thomas Winkler, Managing Director of VSB in Germany.

“North Rhine-Westphalia is one of the federal states that has made significant progress in expanding renewable energy. With the goal of installing 1,000 new wind turbines by the end of 2027, the state government needs to maintain momentum and stay committed to these goals. This can be achieved through accelerated approval processes, increased digitalisation, reduced bureaucracy, and more measures to foster acceptance,” emphasised Dr Felix Grolman, CEO of the VSB Group.
