VSB realises 8 MWp photovoltaic system for thyssenkrupp Rasselstein

VSB is developing an 8 MWp ground-mounted photovoltaic system on the premises of thyssenkrupp Rasselstein GmbH. The project will be delivered by VSB Integrated Energy Solutions, the VSB Group subsidiary specialising in energy solutions for commercial and industrial customers. The long-term on-site PPA covers financing, planning, construction and operation.
Around 12,000 solar modules will be installed on two previously undeveloped areas covering a total of 5.2 hectares. Following planned completion in mid-2027, the system is expected to generate around 8 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity per year. This electricity will be used entirely on site and will cover part of thyssenkrupp Rasselstein’s future demand. The on-site PPA will initially run for 20 years.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026. CO₂-reduced bluemint® Steel from thyssenkrupp Steel with ZM EcoProtect® Solar coating will be used for the steel substructure.
Renewable electricity without own investment
VSB Integrated Energy Solutions covers the investment costs and is responsible for the construction and operation of the system. For thyssenkrupp Rasselstein, this means renewable electricity generated directly on its premises, reduced reliance on the grid and greater predictability of energy costs. At the same time, the project supports thyssenkrupp Steel’s green electricity and decarbonisation strategy

Dr Thorsten Krenke, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and member of the Executive Board of thyssenkrupp Rasselstein GmbH, adds: “Our aim was to cover part of our green electricity requirements locally. The result is the construction of an on-site PV system that shows this is also possible in an established industrial environment.”
On-site PPAs for industry and commerce
This model enables companies to source renewable electricity directly at their own site without tying up their own capital in the system – while benefiting from long-term calculable conditions. Depending on the specific structure, grid fees, levies and other cost components may also be reduced.
The project for thyssenkrupp Rasselstein joins the PPA projects that VSB has already realised for commercial and industrial customers – including Carrefour, Hutchinson, Lhyfe, Mercedes-Benz, METRO and Sealed Air.
