VSB France which operates across Europe, has officially inaugurated the Eoliennes de Fadoumal wind farm in Arzenc-de-Randon, in the Lozère department. The opening ceremony took place in the presence of Maël Lagarde, Managing Director of VSB France, together with representatives from local government, public administration and the region.

The wind farm is located in the Occitanie region and comprises six Enercon E-82 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 2.3 MW. The total installed capacity is 13.8 MW. This means the wind farm generates enough electricity to supply the equivalent of more than 13,000 residents and avoids around 8,400 tonnes of CO₂ per year. VSB France developed and built the project and is also responsible for its technical and administrative management.

With the commissioning of the wind farm, VSB France is strengthening its presence in the French market. In Occitanie, the company now manages wind turbines with a total capacity of more than 50 MW – both within its own portfolio and on behalf of third parties.

The Eoliennes de Fadoumal wind farm has two notable technical features. Firstly, the site is located at an altitude of 1,420 metres. This elevated location placed special demands on planning, logistics and the construction process. The works were adapted to the climatic conditions and the rhythm of the seasons – including a weather-related winter break.

Secondly, all wind turbines are equipped with an innovative, patented 3D bird detection system. The system is provided by the European partner BIOSECO. Due to both site-specific factors, the entire wind farm has been equipped with this technology in order to ensure the best possible protection for birds. Without permanently curtailing the turbines, the system initially uses optical deterrence and can subsequently trigger a temporary turbine shutdown for as long as a bird remains in the risk area.

“Eoliennes de Fadoumal is a prime example of what defines VSB: technical expertise, regional roots and responsibility towards nature and biodiversity. Under challenging topographical and climatic conditions, VSB France has successfully delivered a high-performing project that also relies on innovative technologies to protect birdlife. In doing so, we are strengthening our position in France and making an important contribution to a secure and sustainable energy supply in Europe,” says Dr Felix Grolman, CEO of the VSB Group.

“Building at high altitude is always demanding,” explains Maël Lagarde, Managing Director of VSB France. “We have successfully mastered these conditions and are delighted to have completed this wind farm. Thanks to state-of-the-art technical innovations, we can limit its impact on birdlife. This is a clear benefit when it comes to better reconciling nature conservation with the generation of decarbonised energy.”
