Northern Hesse: green light for VSB wind farm in Wirmighausen

Wind farm developer VSB is set to begin construction of two wind turbines with a total capacity of 11.2 megawatts (MW) this year in the northern Hessian municipality of Diemelsee. The turbines will be erected in the district of Wirmighausen and are scheduled to go into operation in 2027.
VSB, serving as project developer and planner with a regional office in Kassel, received the building permit in December 2024. The start of construction is based on the company’s successful participation in the German Federal Network Agency’s onshore wind energy auctions. VSB was awarded the necessary contract in the first auction round of 2025.
Each of the two wind turbines will have a nominal capacity of 5.6 MW. Extensive site preparation will begin this year in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district, with construction of the turbines expected to start in June 2026. Commissioning is planned for summer 2027.
As part of the project, regional reforestation measures will be carried out to compensate for the environmental impact. These will cover an area of approximately 20,000 square meters. Additionally, the turbines will be shut down under specific conditions to protect bats - for example, during periods of increased bat activity at certain times of the year and day.
“VSB has been developing and building wind farms in Hesse for over 12 years, and we can clearly sense the state government’s commitment to promoting wind energy. These are strong and reliable signals for businesses and climate protection, paving the way toward a sustainable energy future,” says Thomas Winkler, Managing Director of VSB Germany.
Once operational, the wind farm will contribute to regional economic development by ensuring that a significant portion of the business tax revenue remains in the host municipality. In addition, the municipalities of Diemelsee, Twistetal, and the town of Korbach -all located within a 2.5-kilometer radius of the turbines - will benefit from the project. In accordance with section 6 of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), VSB will share 0.2 cents per kilowatt-hour of wind farm revenue with these local authorities. Depending on the energy output, this translates to an annual payment of approximately €30,000 to €35,000 per turbine.
