Municipal Utilities Amberg and VSB Germany have officially launched a groundbreaking wind energy project with the signing of a key contract. Located in a forest south of Köfering near the A6 motorway, the project highlights the shared commitment of both organisations to sustainable and climate-friendly energy generation in the region.
This initiative aims to boost regional economic strength while fostering community engagement through diverse participation models. The collaboration between Municipal Utilities Amberg and VSB Germany sends a clear message about advancing the regional energy transition and combating climate change. Supported by innovative technologies and a strong commitment to sustainability, this partnership lays the groundwork for a reliable and eco-friendly energy supply tailored to future demands.
Frank Backowies, Managing Director of Municipal Utilities Amberg, emphasised the strategic importance of the project for the region: "This wind energy project is a vital step towards realising our vision of a sustainable energy future for Amberg and the surrounding area. Since 2016, we have increased the share of renewable energy in our electricity mix from 12% to an impressive 60%. The wind farm will help us continue this progress and strengthen energy security."
VSB Germany’s more than 25 years of experience in planning and implementing renewable energy projects is a key factor in the project’s success. The Regensburg regional office, which is leading this initiative, is designing measures specifically tailored to the needs of the area. Thomas Winkler, Managing Director of VSB Germany, explained: "Our extensive experience has shown that successful projects emerge when the expertise of local stakeholders, like Municipal Utilities Amberg, is combined with our comprehensive project expertise. Together, we are creating a sustainable future for the region, delivering solutions that are both ecologically and economically sound."
The project will use land owned by the Bürgerspitalstiftung Amberg as well as several private properties designated for renewable energy in Kümmersbruck’s zoning plans. This directly contributes to regional economic development and provides forest owners with additional income through land leases, which can be reinvested in climate-resilient forestry and essential reforestation efforts. The initiative, therefore, also plays a critical role in adapting regional forests to climate change.
Based on completed wind measurements and upcoming environmental and biodiversity studies, the exact configuration of the wind farm will be finalised in the coming months. Once these plans are complete, an information session will be held to keep local residents informed about the project.
Michael Cerny, Mayor of Amberg, stated: "With today’s contract signing, we are sending a strong signal for a sustainable energy future for our city and the region. The construction of this wind farm is not only a key step for climate protection but also a symbol of collaboration and trust. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the surrounding communities and their citizens – without their support and engagement, this project would not be possible. Together, we have laid a solid foundation for an eco-friendly energy supply that will benefit future generations."
Roland Strehl, First Mayor of Kümmersbruck, added: "The energy transition can only succeed if municipalities rise to the challenges it presents. The Municipality of Kümmersbruck is doing just that! A key factor for success is ensuring citizens share in the economic benefits. In this regard, Municipal Utilities Amberg and VSB Germany are guarantors of fair cooperation."
Albert Geitner, First Mayor of Ursensollen, highlighted: "The transition to renewable energy poses unique challenges for rural areas. I am grateful that priority area planning for this site has been harmoniously coordinated with our neighbouring municipality, Kümmersbruck. It is also essential to involve residents and those directly affected, including offering financial incentives. Citizen participation is an absolute must."
