30 Years of VSB Group: From Project Developer to Full-Service Energy Provider with a European Footprint

VSB Group is celebrating 30 years of company history. What began in 1996 as a small engineering office in Dresden has grown into a Europe-wide project developer and operator of wind and photovoltaic parks as well as battery storage systems, following a clear growth path into the next stage of the energy transition. Now part of TotalEnergies, a global integrated energy company, VSB joins a broader collective driven by a shared ambition: accelerating the shift to a sustainable energy system at scale.

With around 592 megawatts of installed capacity, VSB generates and supplies renewable electricity to grids across Europe. The company is currently building projects in Germany, Poland and France, representing a total capacity of 447 megawatts under construction. Since its founding, the group has delivered more than 3 gigawatts of renewable energy projects or developed them to a ready-to-build stage before divesting them, establishing itself as a recognized and well-established player in the sector. VSB also provides technical and commercial asset management services for both its own portfolio and third-party plants.

New chapter with international strength
Since 2025, VSB Group has been part of the global energy company TotalEnergies. Together, the partners are working to significantly scale up renewable power generation by 2030, supporting TotalEnergies’ objective to reach 120 TWh of net electricity production, with 70% generated from renewable sources. VSB contributes in particular its expertise in the development of wind and photovoltaic projects in Germany and across Europe. Going forward, the focus will increasingly be on not only generating green electricity, but also storing it and delivering it precisely where it is needed – for example to industrial companies and commercial businesses in the regions. Battery storage systems, hybrid wind-and-solar projects and direct power purchase agreements will therefore play an increasingly important role.

Dr Felix Grolman, CEO of VSB Group: “The energy transition has become a key industrial policy task for Europe. It is not only about climate action, but also about competitiveness, security of supply and technological sovereignty. Looking back at 30 years of VSB, one conviction stands out: renewable energies must be approached as an integrated system across the power value chain. In this context, joining TotalEnergies will further strengthen this integrated model and accelerate the development of our projects, opening a new chapter for the company.”

Rooted in Dresden, growing across Europe
Despite its international expansion, Dresden remains VSB’s home base. From here, numerous projects have been initiated and managed over the past three decades. At the same time, VSB has grown continuously: what began as a two-person engineering office has evolved into a company with more than 500 employees in six European countries. Around 60 percent of them are based in Germany alone.
