Expansion at Elster Wind Farm: Two Additional Turbines for Clean Energy

 / 17.10.2024

Elster Wind Farm represents progress towards a more sustainable energy supply in our region. Now, there's more good news: two additional wind turbines have been approved, bringing the total number of turbines in the park to 18.

The local emissions control authority in Wittenberg County has given the green light for two more wind turbines. This will expand the wind farm to a total of 18 state-of-the-art turbines – another significant step for sustainable energy supply in our region and marking the start of the second expansion phase of the wind farm.

The first phase, consisting of 16 turbines, is already in full swing. With the new approvals, the wind farm will soon reach an impressive total capacity of 118.8 megawatts. This means we’ll be able to supply around 75,000 households annually with clean electricity – about 267 gigawatt hours of green energy.

We are thrilled with this progress, as the repowering project demonstrates how new technologies can help us achieve climate goals faster. As Thomas Winkler, Managing Director of VSB Germany, emphasises: "The repowering project at Elster impressively shows how existing wind energy sites can be optimally developed further. Such projects are crucial to ensuring a reliable and climate-friendly energy supply. We are taking a big step towards our goal of a secure and climate-friendly energy future and are proud to be driving this pioneering project forward in the region."

The coming months will be exciting: by the end of the year, the installation of steel tower elements and turbines will begin. The first turbines of the second expansion phase are expected to be operational by spring next year. Stay tuned – we will keep you updated on developments.
