Elster wind farm expands: two additional turbines

 / 17.10.2024

The Elster wind farm is being expanded further: two additional wind turbines will be added to the 16 turbines already approved, bringing the total number of turbines at the wind farm to 18.

The Lower Immission Control Authority of the Wittenberg district has approved the two additional wind turbines. This also marks the start of the second development phase of the wind farm.

Work on the first development phase, comprising 16 turbines, is well under way. With the two additional turbines, the wind farm will reach a total installed capacity of 118.8 MW. The forecast annual energy yield is around 267 GWh, equivalent to the calculated annual electricity consumption of approximately 75,000 households.

The repowering project demonstrates how existing wind energy sites can be further developed using modern turbine technology. As Thomas Winkler, Managing Director of VSB Germany, explains: “The repowering project in Elster demonstrates how existing wind energy sites can be further developed. By replacing older turbines with modern, higher-capacity models, significantly more electricity can be generated at the existing site.”

The next stage will see the installation of the steel tower sections and turbines. The first turbines in the second development phase are scheduled to enter operation in spring.
