By the year of 2040, the free state of Thuringia plans to cover the regional energy consumption completely by renewable energies. Pölzig windfarm, set in the area of Greiz, contributes to meeting this goal by producing energy for about 6,000 households every year.

Pölzig as a showcase – large compensatory measures

As a part of the windfarm’s overall concept, existing mixed orchards were extended by planting apple and pear trees. Thereby, new living space was created for the little owl, which is in danger of extinction and has one of its last population centres in Eastern Thuringia. Above that, near the old stone quarry at the Hoher Rain, a part of the field has been converted into a speciose meadow. VSB’s environmental planners also had a keen eye on the protection of birds of prey. Hence, the turbines are shut down every year for a number of days around harvest time so that hunting birds will not be impaired. Please find more information on the windfarm in the booklet “Our best! Eight successful compensatory measures for wind energy projects in Thuringia” (editors: Bundesverband WindEnergie e.V.
