VSB supports the preservation of an ancient Roman domus in Sicily

A technical sponsorship signed by VSB Italia, a project developer specialising in wind energy and photovoltaics, with the Municipality of Mazara del Vallo (Sicily) will ensure the preservation of the city's historical and artistic heritage and offer a new museum to the community.
The link between the business world and the valorisation of Italy’s artistic and cultural heritage is becoming stronger. Thanks to the technical sponsorship agreement signed by VSB Italy with the Municipality of Mazara del Vallo, an ambitious project will soon take shape for the valorisation and musealisation of an ancient late Roman Domus and its mosaics, located under the church of San Nicolò Regale in Mazara del Vallo, in the province of Trapani. The project aims to safeguard the heritage of great historical, artistic, architectural, and cultural value of the Sicilian town and ensure its complete enjoyment by the entire community. VSB is currently developing a wind farm in the area to accelerate the energy transition and generate more green electricity.

The Roman mosaics, which will be restored to their former glory, are located under the churchyard of the small church of San Nicolò Regale, along the road that runs alongside the river Màzaro. These are most likely mosaics from a Domus built between the 4th and 5th Centuries AD., discovered by chance in 1933 about one metre below the current street level. The presence of pools clad in hydraulic plaster and the remains of small terracotta pipes suggest the existence of a thermal complex. Eight mosaic floors and several rooms were identified within the site.
The designs were drawn up with the support of specialised archaeologists from ArcheOfficina, the Archaeological Cooperative Society, which is responsible for the entire site restoration project, and on the directions of the Trapani Superintendency of Cultural and Environmental Heritage, to prevent any damage to the structures preserved in the ancient building.
